Hepatitis, HIV, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, rheumatic diseases: HCC's expertise in immunology

From 2009 to 2011, we coordinated the “Hepatitis Summit” project, which brought together scientific societies (AIGO—Italian Association of Hospital Gastroenterologists; AISF—Italian Association for the Study of the Liver; SIGE—Italian Society of Gastroenterology; SIMIT—Italian Society of Infectious and Tropical Diseases), a general medicine society (SIMG—Italian Society of General Medicine), a patient association (EpaC), and the National Institute of Health. The objective was to "illuminate the most critical facets of the challenges posed by HBV and HCV infections, augment initiatives to circumvent new infections, streamline the identification of these ailments in individuals who have been susceptible to exposure, and cultivate an understanding that it is feasible to address hepatitis B and C and mitigate their repercussions by allocating sufficient resources and seamlessly integrating a collaborative endeavor involving institutions, the scientific community, and voluntary organizations." The project paved the way for the introduction of anti-hepatitis C drugs in Italy and was supported by BMS, Gilead, Janssen, Novartis, Roche, and Schering-Plough. We have worked in the field of HIV for Gilead and Johnson & Johnson (Janssen), the latter of which we have worked with for a long time, even to this day, on chronic inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). Throughout this time, we have not neglected our significant experience with rheumatic diseases, beginning with the introduction of infliximab in our country.
